Frequently Asked Questions

Security Glass Block, Inc. Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does somebody need to be home in order for Security Glass Block to measure my window(s) for a price quote?

A: No. Many of our customers work during the day, and cannot be home between 8:00 and 4:30. We are able to accurately measure more than 95% of the jobs from the outside of the house. The measurements are brought back to the office, where we are able to put together a detailed price quote. The quote is then mailed along with a package of literature, the same day the measurements are taken.

Q: Does somebody need to be home while my window(s) are being installed?

A: Yes. Although you may come and go while we are working on your home as we are all bonded and insured, someone must initially let us in and address any questions or concerns prior to start of the installation.

Q: Do I need to put any money down?

A: No. We generally will do a job from start to finish before we expect to be paid anything. Our position is that since you trust us to do a good job for you and to respect your home, we trust you to pay us in full when we have finished the job.

Q: What type of payment do you accept?

A: We accept cash, checks, VISA, MasterCard, and Discover.

Q: Do you offer a payment plan?

A: No. But since we accept VISA/MasterCard and Discover, you generally have 30 days to pay those charges to the credit card company.

Q: Approximately how long will be required to complete the job?

A: While every job is unique, we have found that, on average, it takes us approximately 30-45 minutes per window to install a basement job, 1 hour to install a bathroom window, and about 1 hour to install a garage window. Labor portion of quote assumes minimum 1 hour on-site.

Q: What kind of warranty do you offer?

A: Security Glass Block, Inc. guarantees all labor and materials for five years, including defects of material, but excluding breakage due to vandalism, accidents, etc. This guarantee is specified at the bottom of all proposal and invoice forms.

Q: Are glass block windows really maintenance-free?

A: Yes, if a glass block panel is assembled and installed properly, the only thing that you might want to do is to wipe the inside with glass cleaner, and spray dirt off the outside with a garden hose.

Q: Are your installers employees of Security Glass Block, or subcontractors?

A: All of our installers are full-time employees of Security Glass Block, Inc. We do not use any sub-contractors with which to install our glass block windows.

Q: How long have your installers worked for Security Glass Block?

A: Security Glass Block, Inc. employs an all-veteran crew of full-time installers with a combined experience of 35 years and rising. They are led by our Chief Installer, who has been with us for over 17 years.

Q: If a single glass block is broken, is the entire window ruined?

A: No. If a stone from a snow blower, a hammer blow by a vandal, or other random event breaks a single block in a window, we are able to remove the broken block, and install a new glass block into the opening.

Q: Is it necessary to put air vents in my basement windows?

A: While it is not required to install any air vents in basement windows, we strongly recommend that you order at least a couple of the windows with air vents as a way to provide some cross ventilation should you ever have a need for outside air in the basement.

Q: Do I need to leave one of the basement windows without glass block for egress and/or code compliance?

A: If your basement is used as a bedroom, the Wisconsin Department of Commerce Uniform Building Codes (21.03 (5) par. B) require that there be a provision to escape in the event of a fire. If, however, your basement is not used as a bedroom, you may glass block all of the windows.

Q: How far does Security Glass Block travel to install glass block?

A: Although the majority of our jobs are within a 20 or 30-mile radius of our facilities (located 2 blocks east of I-894 on Greenfield Avenue, a mile south of the Zoo Interchange), we have installed glass block in Madison, Sheboygan, and Chicago. Depending on the scope of a particular job, we will happily consider traveling outside of our typical radius.

Our Customers Tell You Themselves...

"Just a short note to let you know how much we like our new basement windows.  They really are neat looking and both Pat and I are amazed at the amount of light down there.  The process was fast, quiet and professional.  Believe me, we wouldn't hesitate recommending you and your people to everyone who asks.  Thanks so much for a job well done." Sincerely, Mary Jane S.
