Frequently Asked Questions

You’re probably not an expert in glass block window fabrication – that’s why you’re here. But you’re not the only one with questions. Here is a list of some of the common questions (and answers) customers ask us. We welcome your questions and comments, so keep them coming.

How far does Security Glass Block travel to install glass block?2018-02-20T19:53:02+00:00

Although the majority of our jobs are within a twenty- or thirty-mile radius of our facilities (located two blocks east of I-894 on Greenfield Avenue, a mile south of the Zoo Interchange), we have installed glass block in Madison, Sheboygan, and Chicago. Depending on the scope of a particular job, we will happily consider traveling outside our typical radius.

Do I need to leave one of the basement windows without glass block for egress and code compliance?2018-02-20T19:52:38+00:00

If your basement is used as a bedroom, the Wisconsin Department of Commerce Uniform Building Codes (21.03 (5) par. B) requires that there be a provision for escape in the event of a fire. If, however, your basement is not used as a bedroom, you may install glass block in all the windows.

Is it necessary to put air vents in my basement windows?2018-02-20T19:52:02+00:00

Although it is not required to install any air vents in basement windows, we strongly recommend that you order at least a couple of the windows with air vents as a way to provide some cross-ventilation should you ever need outside air in the basement.

If a single glass block is broken, is the entire window ruined?2018-02-20T19:51:43+00:00

No. If a stone from a snow blower, a hammer blow by a vandal, or another random event breaks a single block in a window, we are able to remove the broken block and install a new block in the opening.

How long have your installers worked for Security Glass Block?2018-02-20T19:51:21+00:00

Security Glass Block employs an all-veteran crew of full-time installers with a combined experience of more than sixty years. They are led by our chief installer, who has been with us for over twenty years.

Are your installers employees of Security Glass Block or subcontractors?2018-02-20T19:51:05+00:00

All our installers are full-time employees of Security Glass Block. We do not use any subcontractors to install our glass block windows.

Are glass block windows maintenance-free?2018-02-20T19:50:48+00:00

Yes. If a glass block panel is assembled and installed properly, the only thing you may need to do is wipe the inside with glass cleaner and spray dirt off the outside with a garden hose.

What kind of warranty do you offer?2018-02-20T19:50:21+00:00

Security Glass Block guarantees all labor and materials for five years, including defects of material but excluding breakage due to vandalism, or accidents. This guarantee is specified at the bottom of all proposal and invoice forms.

Approximately how long will the job take to complete?2018-02-20T19:50:04+00:00

Although every job is unique, we have found that, on average, it takes us approximately thirty to forty-five minutes per window to install a basement job, one hour to install a bathroom window, and about one hour to install a garage window. The labor portion of the price quote assumes a minimum of one hour on site.

Do you offer a payment plan?2018-02-20T19:49:38+00:00

No. But because we accept VISA, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover, you have thirty days to pay those charges to the credit card company without incurring interest charges.

What type of payment do you accept?2018-02-20T19:49:12+00:00

We accept cash, checks, VISA, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover.

Do I need to put any money down?2018-02-20T19:48:48+00:00

No. We will do a job from start to finish before we expect to be paid anything. We appreciate your trusting us to do a good job for you while respecting your home, so we trust you to pay us in full when we have finished the job.

Does anyone need to be home while my window(s) are being installed?2018-02-20T19:48:19+00:00

Yes. Although you may come and go while we are working on your home, someone must initially let us in and address any questions or concerns prior to start of the installation.

Does anyone need to be home in order for Security Glass Block to measure my window(s) for a price quote?2018-02-20T19:47:54+00:00

No. Many of our customers work during the day and cannot be home between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. That is not an issue because we are able to accurately measure more than 95 percent of the jobs from the outside of the house. The measurements are brought back to the office, where we are able to develop a detailed price quote. We will then mail you the quote, along with a package of literature, the same day we take the measurements.
